The ongoing border crisis saw a peak last year with an unprecedented number of encounters at the southwest border. In May, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reported 8,725 encounters, marking a significant reduction compared to the 117,905 illegal immigrants encountered in May of the previous year. This change highlights efforts by the Trump administration to address border security.

House and Senate Republicans, in collaboration with the administration, committed earlier this year to enact effective border security legislation. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (H.R. 1), signed into law this month, represents a historic investment in U.S. border security.

The legislation allocates $46 billion for completing over 700 miles of the southern border wall. President Biden had previously issued an executive order halting its construction on his first day in office. Border Patrol agents have indicated that the wall helps reduce illegal crossings and alleviates pressure on their limited resources.

H.R. 1 also provides funding for hiring 5,000 new CBP officers and 3,000 new Border Patrol agents to enhance safety at the borders. These personnel will be equipped with advanced technology aimed at detecting and seizing fentanyl smuggled through entry ports—a priority emphasized by members of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security.

These investments are part of broader efforts by the administration to curb illegal crossings and foster discussions on positive immigration reform. Continued collaboration between Congress and the administration aims to uphold national sovereignty while promoting legal immigration as a pathway to achieving the American Dream.
