On the two-year anniversary of the October 7, 2023, attacks by Hamas on Israel, Representative Dan Newhouse (WA-04) released a statement calling for peace and urging further action to resolve the ongoing conflict.

“Two years ago, Hamas committed the deadliest attack on the Jewish community since the Holocaust. More than 1,200 Israelis were murdered, and over 250 taken hostage. Today, Hamas still has 48 hostages in Gaza with 20 of them presumed to be alive.

President Trump is working to secure a ceasefire, release all hostages who remain in captivity, and put an end to the death and destruction we have witnessed during this war.

I implore the administration to ensure Hamas accepts the full peace deal, and that they are never again capable of carrying out such an atrocious act of violence,” said Newhouse.

The attack on October 7 resulted in over 1,200 deaths—men, women, and children—including 46 Americans. In addition to those killed, Hamas took 254 hostages; among them were 12 American citizens. As of today, there are still 48 hostages held by Hamas in Gaza; this includes the remains of two American citizens.

Negotiations led by President Trump’s administration are ongoing in an effort to reach a comprehensive peace agreement between parties involved.

Dan Newhouse has served as a member of Congress representing Washington’s 4th district since replacing Doc Hastings in 2015. He previously served in the Washington House of Representatives from 2003 to 2009. Born in Sunnyside, Washington in 1955, Newhouse continues to reside there. He graduated from Washington State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1977.
