Yakima's elected officials have announced the groundbreaking of the first phase of the East-West Corridor.
The project has been planned for 20 years and will provide a second corridor linking Terrace Heights to Yakima, the Yakima Herald reported.
The route will reduce traffic and increase the safety of the public. Plans also call for much-needed improvements on H Street in Yakima that, when complete, will bypass over Interstate 82 to cross the Yakima River.
Yakima Mayor Patricia Byers and other officials used golden shovels to turn over the dirt to break the ground.
“The groundbreaking of this regional project will be of benefit to all of us,” Byers told the Yakima Herald. “This is going to be a huge boon for our northeast community.”
County engineer Matt Pietrusiewicz also commented on the East-West Corridor.
“I was very pleased with our staff," Pietrusiewicz told the Yakima Herald. "They did an outstanding job,” he said. “We tried very hard to be fair to everyone throughout the process.”
