Cost of college went up for resident students at Yakima Valley College

In-state tuition and fees rose 17.1 percent for 2018-19 at Yakima Valley College, according to recent data from the U.S. Department of Education.

Washington residents paid $5,163 to attend the four-year public institution this year – $754 more than the $4,409 charged for 2017-18.

Non-residents paid 9.2 percent more than residents this year, or $5,638. Their price tag grew 16.7 percent from $4,832 in 2017-18.

About 96 percent of the school's undergraduate population are Washington residents. And about 4 percent are residents of other states.

Data shows 75 percent of full-time undergraduates who started school in 2015-16 received student financial aid in some form. In all, 199 students received grants or scholarships totaling $1.2 million and 26 students took out student loans totaling more than $129,446.

Including all undergraduates (4,456), 2,325 students used grants or scholarships totaling $13.9 million, and 626 students took out $3.9 million in federal student loans.
