The new Toppenish-based extreme weather shelter opened on Dec. 14, providing future refuge for community members.
The shelter provides a warm place for homeless people to sleep, who are living outside in the Lower Yakima Valley, YakTriNews.com reported.
“We all said it’s not acceptable to have folks out on the streets with this extreme weather, so we all worked together to try and come up with a solution,” Mike Kay, CEO and Director of Camp Hope, said, YakTriNews.com reported.
Each resident will receive a tent for sleeping. Kay said the tents would provide privacy for the individual, YakTriNews.com reported.
However, an additional wall between people will provide extra protection against the spread of the coronavirus.
Kay said that the large front room within the tents would be used as the dining area, YakTriNews.com reported. The site has enough space for residents to eat in and interact with others without violating social distancing protocol.
