Labor Day is a time-honored tradition where Americans recognize the hardworking men and women who are the backbone of the nation. From the productive apple orchards of Central Washington and the constantly innovating Hanford Site to manufacturing plants and businesses across the country, their skill and dedication drive the economy and strengthen communities. As their achievements are celebrated, it is also important to reaffirm a commitment to policies that support workers.
American workers have been facing significant challenges. Over the past year, job growth has been largely stagnant, 1.2 million Americans have lost their jobs, and the unemployment rate has risen to 4.3%. This is the highest level of joblessness since October 2021, occurring alongside rising prices and increasing difficulties for families struggling to make ends meet.
As a responsible fiscal conservative, ensuring that the economy works for the labor force is necessary. People work hard for their paychecks, and it is crucial that they can afford not just daily essentials but also have means to save for future needs. Unfortunately, current economic conditions make this difficult. One driver of this issue is national debt, which is approaching $35.3 trillion and translates to over $102,800 per person. These numbers are staggering and have been rapidly increasing in recent years due to irresponsible government spending.
As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, efforts have been made to cut excessive spending, refocus funding on initiatives that will benefit Central Washingtonians and everyday Americans, and reverse recent damage. Alongside Congressional colleagues, there has been a strong stance against demands for new unnecessary funding initiatives while working to support American workers. Now it is time for the Senate to pass necessary appropriations bills so cuts needed to get the economy back on track can be made.
It is up to the federal government to swiftly change course and chart a path towards a better tomorrow—especially for hardworking men and women who keep the nation on track. The Hanford employees advancing nuclear innovation in the region, agricultural workers providing food that feeds the nation, and restaurant servers bringing dinner at local spots in Kennewick deserve an economy that works for them.
In Congress, there remains a commitment to supporting legislation that incentivizes job creation and strengthens the economy. By ensuring workers have tools for success, not only are their contributions honored but also a more prosperous future for all Americans is built.
