Rep. Dan Newhouse has reintroduced legislation aimed at preventing entities linked to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) from purchasing critical American farmland and land adjacent to federal property. The legislation is part of a broader effort to protect U.S. food and national security interests.
"The Chinese Communist Party is our most formidable adversary, and we must act immediately to defend our food and national security interests," said Rep. Newhouse.
The proposed bills seek to involve the Secretary of Agriculture in reviewing foreign land purchases through the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS). "Farmers, ranchers, and landowners across the country deserve the certainty offered by adding the Secretary of Agriculture to CFIUS," Newhouse stated.
The Protecting American Agriculture from Foreign Adversaries Act of 2025 is one piece of this legislative effort. It passed with bipartisan support in a previous session of Congress. Senator Roger Marshall introduced similar legislation in the Senate, emphasizing that "food security is national security."
House original cosponsors include several representatives such as John Moolenaar, Dan Meuser, Michael Guest, Bob Latta, Claudia Tenney, Abraham Hamadeh, Scott Franklin, Daniel Webster, Brett Guthrie, Harriet Hageman, Randy Weber, Chuck Fleischmann, Aaron Bean, Jake Ellzey, Ashley Hinson, Bob Onder, Lance Gooden, Don Bacon, Mike Bost, Gabe Evans among others.
A second bill known as the No American Land for Communist China Act aims to prevent CCP-affiliated entities from buying land near U.S. national security sites. Senator Cynthia Lummis has introduced companion legislation in the Senate. She stated: "Putting America First means preventing the Chinese Communist Party from buying up western land."
Cosponsors for this legislation also include John Moolenaar along with other representatives like Dan Meuser and Michael Guest.
