A federal mask requirement related to public transportation has been extended through May 3rd.

Yakima Transit employees and passengers will need to continue wearing masks/face coverings while on board the bus and utilizing Dial-A-Ride services. The mask mandate extension also applies to passengers and personnel at the Yakima Airport terminal and on flights.

In March, the federal Transportation Security Administration (TSA) originally announced the public transportation mask requirement would be in place through April 18th. In an announcement today, Wednesday, the TSA extended it an additional 15 days through May 3rd due to concerns about the Omicron COVID-19 variant, especially the BA 2 subvariant that makes up more than 85 percent of U.S. cases.

“Since early April 2022, there have been increases in the 7-day moving average of COVID-19 cases in the United States,” the TSA said in today’s announcement.
