Every year, Veterans Day serves as a moment to honor those who have served in the U.S. military. It is a time to acknowledge the sacrifices made by veterans from America's founding to the present day.

A representative of Central Washington expressed gratitude for meeting veterans dedicated to preserving freedoms. "From their courageous service on battlefields around the world to their ongoing efforts to support the local veteran community back home, our veterans have given more than we can ever repay," they stated. They emphasized the importance of honoring promises made to veterans by ensuring they receive necessary care and support.

Efforts in Congress have focused on improving services for veterans, including healthcare access and benefits. Despite progress, challenges remain, particularly with navigating the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Issues with health care quality and patient safety arose following the implementation of the Oracle Health EHR system. In response, legislation was co-sponsored in May: "The Electronic Health Record (EHR) Program Restructure, Enhance, Strengthen, and Empower Technology (RESET) Act," aimed at modernizing and improving this system.

Additionally, work has been done to enhance the VA Caregiver Program. The process for applying for caregiver support services has been described as bureaucratic. To address this issue, another piece of legislation was co-sponsored: "The Veterans Caregiver Application and Appeals Reform (CARE) Act." This act would require qualified medical specialists to evaluate applications and improve transparency.

Healthcare remains crucial for supporting veterans; however, providing resources for rebuilding lives post-service is equally important. Many face difficulties transitioning back into civilian life due to complex benefit processes. An annual Veterans Service Fair offers opportunities for exploring available resources such as healthcare benefits, mental health counseling, employment opportunities, and educational assistance.

Veterans from Central Washington are encouraged to contact district offices if they need help with VA benefits or other related issues. The representative urged reaffirming commitment towards bettering veteran lives: "The United States remains the land of the free because of the brave."
