In Central Washington, agriculture is a critical component of the community and economy. A third-generation farmer from Yakima Valley, who also serves in Congress, has been actively engaging with local farmers to understand their challenges and discuss potential solutions.

Recent natural disasters have significantly impacted farming operations in this region, which is one of the top agricultural areas in the United States. The congressman emphasized the need for a "common-sense safety net" for growers to maintain market competitiveness. He has advocated for provisions in the Farm Bill aimed at expanding access to crop insurance and increasing agricultural exports.

Efforts are underway to improve disaster and conservation programs for producers. This includes collaboration with Agriculture Committee Chairman G.T. Thompson to enhance the Tree Assistance Program by lowering plant death thresholds and expanding eligible crops. These changes aim to broaden access to assistance, helping producers recover and prepare for future growing seasons.

The congressman highlighted existing restrictions on disaster and conservation programs that hinder assistance access for those primarily reliant on agriculture income. To address this, he proposed a waiver eliminating Adjusted Gross Income limitations for participants earning 75% or more of their income from agriculture, offering necessary relief.

Export barriers were another concern raised by producers. In response, the congressman introduced the Agriculture Export Promotion Act of 2023, which seeks to double trade promotion programs like the Market Access Program and Foreign Market Development Program. He announced its inclusion in the House Version of the Farm Bill as a step towards reducing crop waste and improving profit margins.

The congressman underscored the importance of supporting farmers with resources and backing as an investment not only in their future but also in that of the entire economy. He expressed commitment to advocating for Central Washington’s producers through a comprehensive Farm Bill designed to set up industry success.
