A partnership between the Downtown Association of Yakima (DAY), the City of Yakima, and private partners has resulted in a substantial and exciting renovation to the two N. 2nd Street parklets adjacent to Yakima Avenue in Downtown Yakima.
Utilizing monies from the City’s contribution to the Main Street Tax Credit Program, DAY oversaw the project to upgrade brickwork in the two parklets which had fallen in disrepair. Now, the brick has brand new caps and all imperfections to the facing have been repaired. The work was performed by JEI Masonry with the City assisting where needed.
In the east parklet, sturdy and hand-crafted bistro tables have been added – one free standing and one with permanent seats. These tables were designed and fabricated by John O’Rourke, current Code Compliance Officer for the City of Yakima and a member of the DAY Design committee. The circular borders of the tables consist of grates that were previously used to support trees in the downtown, displaying a tremendous spirit of sustainability and creativity.
And to top it all off, members of the DAY Design Committee have crafted a dazzling holiday light display in the two parklets. Headed up by O’Rourke, the team brought to life an array of lights that bursts with holiday spirit. City crews assisted w/ electrical needs and mounting brackets for light placement.
“This is a great example of partnerships fostering significant improvements to our community, “says, Executive Director of DAY, Andrew Holt. “We greatly appreciate everyone who contributed: the City of Yakima and its hardworking crews, members of the DAY Design Committee, especially John O’Rourke, and JEI Masonry.”
