During the previous administration, illegal border crossings reached unprecedented levels. As the country transitions to a new administration, there is a call for the federal government to implement practical solutions to address what is being described as a border crisis.

Over the past four years, more than 10 million illegal migrant encounters have been reported nationwide. There have also been executive orders that some argue have weakened border security. The end of catch-and-release policies and the 'Remain in Mexico' program, along with increased use of immigration shortcuts like the CBP One app, are contributing factors to what is now seen as an illegal migration crisis. However, there is optimism that control over borders can be regained in the coming years.

Increasing manpower and improving infrastructure are suggested methods for regaining control. Providing Border Patrol agents with necessary support is emphasized as crucial for retaining skilled personnel and attracting new hires. Additionally, it is suggested that using materials already paid for to strengthen physical barriers and equipping ports of entry will help manage commerce flow while preventing illegal activities such as smuggling fentanyl or human trafficking. Restarting effective programs from the past could also help curb illegal migration.

The federal government is urged to adopt a pragmatic approach towards legal immigration by strengthening and streamlining the asylum process. This would protect genuine asylum seekers while maintaining national security. Emphasizing a fair process aims to prevent exploitation of immigration laws.

In Congress, efforts are underway to improve the current system through legislation aimed at protecting agricultural labor while providing pathways to legal status for farmworkers. The Farm Workforce Modernization Act introduces reforms to the H-2A agricultural guestworker program by creating a merit-based visa program specifically for agriculture. This initiative seeks not only safe legal pathways but also aims to reduce incentives for illegal migration, address agricultural labor shortages, and strengthen food supply chains.

The United States prides itself on being a land of immigrants but emphasizes that secure borders are essential for national safety. There is a call for strong leadership and decisive action in implementing federal policies aimed at curbing illegal migration.

"Border security is national security," reflects this perspective on addressing these issues effectively.
