Today, the House of Representatives approved a resolution introduced by Rep. Dan Newhouse (WA-04) to censure Rep. Al Green (D-TX). The decision followed an incident during President Trump's address to a Joint Session of Congress, where Rep. Green was accused of violating decorum rules. The resolution passed with a bipartisan vote tallying 224 in favor, 198 against, and two abstentions.
Rep. Newhouse stated, "President Trump’s address to Congress was not a debate or a forum; he was invited by the Speaker to outline his agenda for the American people." He added that Rep. Green's actions broke House decorum rules and emphasized the need for accountability and respect within the institution.
Majority Leader Steve Scalise described the incident: "During President Trump’s Joint Address, Rep. Al Green interrupted the President numerous times in a disgraceful display breaching proper conduct." Scalise noted that despite warnings from Speaker Johnson, Rep. Green continued his interruptions until he was escorted out by the Sergeant at Arms.
"This type of behavior is unacceptable and strictly prohibited by House Rules," said Scalise, expressing gratitude towards Rep. Newhouse for introducing the resolution.
Majority Whip Tom Emmer echoed similar sentiments: “Rep. Al Green’s outburst during President Trump’s joint address to Congress was a clear violation of decorum.” He commended Rep. Newhouse for reinforcing order and respect in the House.
House GOP Conference Chair Lisa McClain also commented on the situation: "Representative Al Green disrespected the President’s constitutional obligation and the American people." She expressed disappointment that 198 Democrats supported Rep. Green's actions.
